Bo

I wasn't going to deny that Ruby's attitude about having sex with me was a blow to my ego. She could simply tell me that it wouldn't happen again without acting like we had just committed the worst sin possible. It was like she was revolted at having let me touch her.

I was Bo Fucking Tyler, goddammit. I wasn't perfect, but I wasn't an ogre, either. Ruby, of all people, should have known that. Maybe it was the ten years we’d been apart. We weren’t the same people now. Whatever it was, it was exasperating.

When I got up the next morning, I headed over to Somerset to buy a ring. The entire way, I was second-guessing myself. She hadn't changed her mind last night, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she did after last night. But we had shaken on the deal, so I was going to follow through by buying her ring, and as soon as I learned what car she wanted, I’d buy that for her too.

I chose to go to a jeweler in Somerset, thinking that it would take longer to get back to my family what I was doing. I also didn't want the engagement to get out into the media. This little ruse was for my mother, not the world, to know about.

I did my best to disguise myself wearing the requisite ball cap and sunglasses and keeping my head down. It took me a while to find a ring that I thought would suit Ruby.

She was an understated beauty. If she cared about her appearance and did all the things that Sandra did, Ruby would be a knockout. Ruby's beauty was natural and internal. She liked simple.

At the same time, I knew Laina would have judgment on the ring, and I wanted to make sure that she would approve. I also needed to choose one that would bring in a nice chunk of change when Ruby went to sell it. I hoped that she would do something fun with the proceeds of the sale, like take Laina on vacation.

But Ruby was practical, and I imagined it would go in a college fund for Laina. What Ruby didn't know was that from now on, I would find ways to help her and Laina out. I owed it to her and to Mark. Ruby's pride wouldn’t allow her to take a handout, so I was still trying to figure out how I could help them.

When I arrived at her house and she opened the door, I felt pretty certain I was about to take that ring back, but after she'd tossed a few zingers my way, she accepted the ring and agreed to come to dinner tonight to make the announcement. Hallelujah.

When I left her house, I went home, avoiding my mother in the kitchen as I went up to my room. I changed into shorts and a T-shirt and put on my sneakers, then headed out to the barn to do my physical therapy. Leif had gone through the entire program, so I didn’t need him around anymore, anyway.
